Thursday Night Event: Austin Community Development

With many thanks to our friends at the Austin Community Foundation, a fascinating and engaging evening has been planned.  From Airport to Community: The Mueller Redevelopment Project will give us a behind-the-scenes view of a major community development project.  When Austin’s close-in airport closed in 1999, it opened up more than 700 acres of prime property near historically Hispanic and African-American neighborhoods. The ambitious effort to redevelop Robert Mueller Municipal Airport into a mixed-use urban village in the heart of the city has helped Austin chart new directions. The award-winning Mueller master plan and the ambitious Master Development Agreement with Catellus Development Group and the City of Austin are the culmination of decades of community planning efforts from visionary neighbors and active citizens.

Sustainable development is one of the six guiding tenets of Mueller (pronounced Miller) and included recycling the airport runway, planting 15,000 trees, green-building standards and an innovative power plant that provides electricity to the Mueller microgrid.

Now the family-oriented Mueller neighborhood is home to:

  • More than 5,700 single-family and multifamily homes (at least 25% in the Mueller Affordable Homes Program)
  • A town center with shops, plazas and live/work spaces
  • 13 miles of new hike and bike paths and lanes
  • The University of Texas Medical Research Campus
  • Austin Film Studios
  • Connections to public transportation
  • Class A office space
  • Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas
  • The Thinkery – children’s museum
